Dispatch No. 002 The Nottingham Avenue Affair

The Great California Stop

In which a rolling stop becomes a referendum on civilization.

It began with a photograph and a thanksgiving. The Town Crier posted, in the reverent tone of a man documenting a rare comet, hard evidence of a police cruiser sighted in the wild on Nottingham Avenue — "first time in six years!" — with warm gratitude to the Hendersonville department and a heartfelt plea that they return "every day." Eighty-nine souls reacted. The comet, it would turn out, had a name.

Enter the Ordinance Scholar — yes, her again, our tireless field correspondent on all matters of infraction — who wondered aloud whether the stopped vehicle might be the very one she had phoned in to the non-emergency line, on account of its "zero operating brake lights." A woman, as ever, never off the clock.

Then came the question that launches a thousand threads: "Wonder how fast he was going?" And here the saga achieved something rare and beautiful — the defendant himself materialized to enter a plea.

The Accused rose to correct the record with the wounded dignity of a man slandered by implication. He was not speeding. He was traveling, by his own sworn estimate, less than five miles per hour. He had performed — and he supplied the technical term unprompted — a "California stop" at the Westchester intersection, failing to bring the needle fully to zero. He received a warning. He vowed, going forward, to be "more deliberate about getting the needle to zero."

"California stop," ruled the officer. "California Roll," recalled a witness. And thus a culinary jurisprudence was born.

The chorus assembled. The Veteran recalled her own long-ago brush with the identical maneuver. The Voice of Perspective proposed that the true menace was not our man at all but the children "scooting the scoots." He was, as all who seek perspective are, gently ignored.

The needle, at time of publication, remains unconfirmed at zero.
